ถ้าใครเป็นพวกที่ชอบเล่นอะไรแผลง ๆ กับ Windows คงจะต้องรู้จักโปรแกรมช่วยชีวิตที่มีชื่อว่า Ghost โปรแกรมนี้จะทำไฟล์ Image ของพาร์ทิชัน หรือถ้าอธิบายง่าย ๆ ก็คือการทำสำเนาข้อมูล Windows ทั้งหมด เก็บเป็นไฟล์ Image เพื่อไว้ใช้เวลาที่ Windows เกิดพังขึ้นมา เราก็เพียงนำไฟล์ Image ที่เราทำไว้เรียกคืนมา เท่านี้ Windows ของเราก็จะใช้งานได้เหมือนใหม่อีกครั้งโดยไม่ต้องติดตั้ง Windows ใหม่

สะดวกดีใช่ไหมละครับ มาจนถึงปัจจุบันโปรแกรมประเภทนี้มีมากมายหลายตัว ทั้ง Ghost , True Image และอื่น ๆ แต่ Ghost ก็ยังคงได้รับความนิยมไม่เสื่อมคลาย
บนแมคอีกก็มีโปรแกรมสำหรับทำสำเนาทั้ง partition อยู่เหมือนกัน แต่จะอยู่บนแผ่นติดตั้ง Mac OS X เลย ไฟล์ที่ได้บนแมคจะเป็น .dmg

โปรแกรมที่แนะนำในครั้งนี้ไม่ใช่โปรแกรมทำไฟล์ Image สำหรับแมค แต่เป็นโปรแกรมทำไฟล์ Image สำหรับ Windows แต่ทำงานบนแมค! หลายท่านที่ใช้แมคอินเทล (Mac Intel) ตอนนี้จะได้ประโยชน์จากการที่สามารถลง Windows ผ่านทาง Boot Camp ได้ และที่แน่นอนคือเราไม่สามารถใช้ Ghost เพื่อทำสำเนา Windows ไว้ได้ ซึ่งเป็นการไม่ปลอดภัย (เพราะ Windows พังบ่อย…ใช่ไหมครับ) ดังนั้นโปรแกรม WinClone จึงบังเกิดขึ้นเพื่อแก้ไขปัญหานี้

WinClone จะทำสำเนา Partition ของ Windows ที่ติดตั้งผ่านทาง Boot Camp และจะเก็บเป็นไฟล์ Image ของ WinClone เอง เวลาที่ Windows มีปัญหาจะสามารถเรียกคืนได้ง่าย ๆ จากการทำสอบโปรแกรมทำงานได้เป็นอย่างดีแต่ค่อนข้างช้าครับ

ความสามารถของโปรแกรมในรุ่น 2.0.5 ที่ผู้พัฒนาได้ประกาศไว้มีดังนี้

• Source partition is not changed when cloning (except for removal of pagefile.sys)

• Clone to your Bootcamp partition either on a separate drive or on the same that contains your Mac OS X partition.
• Creates image documents that can be stored on any media and double-clicked to open in WinClone.
• Verbose logging so you know what is going on
• Built on the open source ntfstools, which are included in Winclone, so you don’t have to install anything else.
• Fast: Restore a 10 GB image in less than 10 minutes.
• Create a Bootcamp partition from within Winclone.
• Do it all from the boot drive: You don’t need to boot from a Firewire drive to clone the Windows partition.
• Clean and uncomplicated interface

ในเวอร์ชันล่าสุด จะทำงานได้บน Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard เท่านั้น แต่เวอร์ชัน 1.6 จะทำงานได้บน Tiger ด้วย
